The Capella Regalis Men and Boys Choir
Capella Regalis Men and Boys Choir (formerly the Saint George's Men and Boys Choir) has moved to King's College Chapel and been renamed. Translated from the Latin, the new name means 'King’s chapel'.
In its new home, the 16 boys and 10 adult males of the choir (who are also members of the King's College Chapel Choir), will sing at regular services at King's College Chapel and also perform a number of concerts throughout the year.
Under the direction of Nick Halley, the choir sang its first Choral Evensong in the chapel on 16 November. The repertoire for this service included an Introit by Bourgois, “O Gladsome Light,” followed by the standard, beautiful Anglican chants for the preces and responses, as well as the psalm. The choir will sing Evensong once a month during Easter term, on February 1, March 1, April 5 and May 3, at 5.00 PM.
"I've been hoping to get the boys to the point where they are capable of singing regular Evensong services, and I’m very pleased that that’s where we are. The form and rhythm of the office of Evensong are perfect for the boys. Because it's an almost entirely sung service, they are learning new music all the time, and becoming familiar with the great musical legacy of many centuries and cultures."
The choir also performed in a Christmas concert on 20 December at First Baptist Church in Halifax. Nick Halley said of this concert, "The music for this will be right out of the traditional vein, with some of the great English and French carols that carry us into Christmas, interspersed with a few hymns and perhaps one or two renaissance pieces. With this concert I hope to bring us back to the simple beauty that we naturally associate with the season." The choir will also sing a spring concert on May 30, following the tour mentioned below.
In the spring, the choir will go on tour in Nova Scotia. The boys of the choir will also be performing with the King's College Chapel Choir in Bach's St Matthew Passion, under the direction of Paul Halley, on 20 April in Lunenburg and 22 April in All Saints Cathedral, Halifax.
More information is available at the choir website.
About Capella Regalis: The Saint George's Men Boys Choir was launched early in 2010 following auditions for boy singers. Comprising 16 boys from around Halifax and several of the adult male singers from the King's College Chapel Choir, the group performed its first concert in June 2010 in the presence of the Lieutenant Governor of Nova Scotia. Director Nick Halley is instructing the boys in all aspects of performance, as well as teaching them how to read music. In October 2010 the choir moved to its new home at King's College Chapel and renamed itself Capella Regalis Men and Boys Choir. To arrange an audition, please email Nick Halley or telephone 229-3474.
