SAMS - the Saint Andrew's Mission Society
Looking to get involved on campus and in the Halifax community but don’t know where to start? Looking for deeper meaning in community service and social justice issues? SAMS is an outlet to point you in the many directions that volunteer work can take you. From soup kitchens to helping with homeless housing, SAMS can help you find your community service niche in a fun and meaningful way. Whether you are looking for a one-time commitment or regular involvement, SAMS is here to provide you with opportunities to grow and contribute to the society in which we all live. Join SAMS and become a conscientious part of our King’s campus!
On Thursday, Dec 2, 2010, at noon, SAMS invites everyone to an Open Meeting and Discussion on the topic of "Community Beyond Campus" with food catered by KAFCA. Learn about volunteer opportunities around Halifax and partnerships with local organizations. Plus, bring your own ideas for community outreach initiatives.
On Sunday, December 5, at 3:15 PM on the library steps (or in the Manning Room if it's raining) we will meet and then head over to Saint Andrew's Church to volunteer with Sunday Suppers, a program that provides warm meals and a dignified environment to hungry people in Halifax each week.
SAMS has new bulletin board outside Prince Hall for information about upcoming community events and volunteer opportunities.
Christmas with St.George's YouthNet: Anyone who is donating a Christmas present to a child at St George's YouthNet must drop off their gift to the Alex Hall desk by the end of the day on Tuesday, November 30th.
And, on Monday December 6, 2010, you can join the Christmas celebrations at St George's YouthNet and see the impact that our donated gifts have on these kids! Students are welcome to attend the party for the children at St George's Round Church from 6:00-7:30. A group will be leaving together from the Manning Room at 5:30.
Last year's events included a talk titled "The Prospects for Israeli-Palestinian Peace: An Israeli Activist Speaks" which featured Dr. Jeff Halper. Dr. Halper is co-founder of the Israeli Committee Against House Demolitions, and is a member of the Free Gaza flotilla that broke the Gaza blockade in August 2008. He was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize by the American Friends Service Committee.
During December 2008, students took part in two drives. Donations were collected for gift boxes for the Metro Non-Profit Housing Assiciation. Also, gift bags were donated and assembled for St George's YouthNet, and given at the St Nick Party on Dec 6th.
In October 2008, SAMS co-sponsored a roundtable discussion with humanitarian Jim Loney entitled 'Building a New Society from the Shell of the Old: A Discussion on Hospitality and Non-violence.' Over 40 people attended to hear Jim speak about his involvement with the Catholic Worker house and the Christian Peacemaker Teams as well as his experience being held hostage in Iraq.
Also, we provided food and served at soup kitchens at St George's Round Church!
Some of the organizations SAMS works with include Saint George's YouthNet, ARK Youth Outreach for transient youth, Halifax Metro Non-Profit Housing Association Support Centre, Stepping Stone, Community Action on Homelessness and the Association for the Protection of the Environment (based out of Cairo, Egypt).
